A rubber-backed mat traps water underneath and smells within a week in a busy property. This one is cotton the whole way through and reversible, so it dries from both sides and goes in the same wash as the towels.

Wash warm with like colours. A commercial wash at 60°C is fine and will not shorten the life of the fibre. Tumble dry low and remove while very slightly damp — that is the single habit that keeps cotton feeling new.
Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibre, and a coated fibre stops absorbing, which is exactly the opposite of what you paid for.
