Striped on purpose. A pool towel that looks like a bath towel ends up in the bathroom, then in the pool, then in the wash with sun cream on it, and then in the bin. Making it visibly different solves the whole problem.

Wash warm with like colours. A commercial wash at 60°C is fine and will not shorten the life of the fibre. Tumble dry low and remove while very slightly damp — that is the single habit that keeps cotton feeling new.
Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibre, and a coated fibre stops absorbing, which is exactly the opposite of what you paid for.
